英、選挙権年齢を全国統一の16歳以上に引き下げへ

The UK government will seek to lower the voting age to 16 for all British elections, it announced on July 17.

The current voting age is 18. However, 16- and 17-year-olds can vote in the Scottish and Welsh parliaments. 

Lowering the voting age was part of the Labour Party’s campaign for the 2024 general election, so the latest move is likely to become law.

イギリス政府は、すべてのイギリスの選挙の選挙権年齢を16歳へ引き下げることを目指すと、7月17日に発表した。

現在の選挙権年齢は18歳だが、すでにスコットランドおよびウェールズの地方議会選挙では16歳および17歳の人も投票することができる。

選挙権年齢の引き下げは、2024年の総選挙における労働党（この選挙で14年ぶりに政権復帰した）の選挙公約の一部だったため、この政府案は法律として成立する見込みだ。
