Accidents by distracted drivers hit a record high in 2024
Driving while using cellphones caused a record 136 accidents involving deaths and serious injuries in 2024, the National Police Agency said on Feb. 27.
The accidents were linked to drivers distracted by smartphones.
Most of the cases — 125 — involved drivers looking at images on mobile phones. Thirty-one of these were fatal.
The NPA said it plans to educate young people about the dangers of distracted driving.

運転中に携帯電話などを使用していたドライバーが起こした死亡・重傷事故が、昨年に過去最多の136件になったと警察庁が２月27日に発表した。
これらの事故はドライバーがスマートフォンに気を取られたために発生している。
事故の大半にあたる125件では、ドライバーがスマートフォンで画像を閲覧中だった。そのうち31件が死亡事故だった。
警察庁は、若者にながら運転の危険性について注意喚起するとしている。
