ニュージーランドの「今年の鳥」に「ホイホ」選出

The hoiho, one of the world’s rarest penguins, was named New Zealand’s Bird of the Year for 2024, competition organizers “Forest and Bird” announced on Sept. 1.

The endangered yellow-eyed penguin, which is native to New Zealand, has an estimated population of between 4,000 and 5,000.

The environmental organization said the penguin is famous for its strong smell and for being shy of humans.

ニュージーランドの２０２４年の「今年の鳥」は世界的にも希少なペンギンである「ホイホ」に決定した、とコンテストの主催団体「フォレスト・アンド・バード」が9月16日に発表した。

ニュージーランド固有の黄色い目をしたこの鳥は絶滅が危惧されており、推定生息数は4000から5000頭だという。

この環境保護団体によれば、ホイホは強いにおいと、人間に近づきたがらない習性で有名だという。

ホイホはマオリ語で、「騒々しい叫び屋」という意味で、キンメペンギンのこと。2019年にも「今年の鳥」に選ばれている。
