Over 1,300 died during Hajj in Saudi Arabia amid intense heat
More than 1,300 people died during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as the temperature soared above 45 degrees Celsius, Saudi authorities said on June 23.
Crowds pack in and around the holy city of Mecca every year to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
This year, temperatures were between 46 and 49 degrees in Mecca and surrounding areas.
Only 31 of the dead were officially authorized by Saudi Arabia as pilgrims, said Egyptian officials in Cairo.
