愛されたジャイアントパンダ、中国に到着

Popular Japanese-born giant panda Xiang Xiang arrived in China from a Tokyo zoo on Feb. 21 after many fans bid her farewell.

The 5-year-old Xiang Xiang was born at Ueno zoo in June 2017. Her parents were both on loan from China.

China maintains ownership over all cubs born to the parents on loan and requires them to be returned.

Xiang Xiang’s stay in Japan was originally set to end once she had turned 2, but the departure had been extended five times due to the coronavirus pandemic.

日本で生まれた人気者のジャイアントパンダ、シャンシャンが多くのファンの見送りを受けたあと、2月21日、成田空港から中国に到着した。

5歳のシャンシャンは2017年の6月に上野動物園で誕生した。シャンシャンの両親はともに中国から貸し出されていた。

中国は、貸し出し中のパンダに生まれた子供の所有権を主張し、子供の返還を求めている。

当初、シャンシャンは２歳になったときに中国に返される予定だったが、コロナ禍のため、５度延期されていた。
