海面上昇でモアイ像に危機、今世紀末に水没の恐れ

Easter Island of Chile is famous for its moai statues. However, they may be hit by powerful waves by the end of the century, a new study says.

The cause is global warming leading to rising seas.

The study, published on Aug. 13 in the Journal of Cultural Heritage, uses computers to simulate future wave movements.

It says a well-known platform of 15 moai, could be at risk from seasonal waves and flooding by 2080.

チリのイースター島はモアイ像で有名だ。しかし、それらの像は今世紀末までに強力な波により被害を受ける可能性があると、最近の研究が示している。

原因は、地球温暖化による海面上昇である。

この研究結果は、８月１３日に「Journal of Cultural Heritage（文化遺産ジャーナル）」誌に発表されたもので、コンピューターを用いて将来の波の動きをシミュレーションしている。

それによると、モアイ像15体が並ぶ有名な台座が、2080年までに季節的な波の影響を受け、水没の恐れがあるという。
