Hokkaido Shinkansen line starts
A new Shinkansen bullet train line opened on March 26, linking Tokyo and Hakodate in Hokkaido with substantially shorter travel times. The high-speed trains travel between a new Hakodate station and the capital in just four hours and two minutes, using the undersea Seikan Tunnel connecting Hokkaido and Aomori Prefecture at the northern end of Japan's main Honshu Island.
