Merkel calls on EU countries to welcome more refugees

 

As Europe struggles to cope with a crisis of massive numbers of refugees, German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sept. 7 called on EU nations to take in more of the refugees. Many of the refugees are fleeing violent conflicts in Middle Eastern and African nations such as Syria. Merkel said that closing borders “won’t work in the long run.”

メルケル独首相、難民受け入れ増をEU諸国に要請

ヨーロッパが、難民が大量に押し寄せる危機に対処しようとしている中、ドイツのアンゲラ・メルケル首相は９月７日、EU諸国にもっと難民を受け入れるように求めた。難民の多くはシリアなど中東諸国やアフリカの激しい紛争から逃れて来ている。メルケル首相は、国境を閉鎖しても「長期的にはうまくいかない」と述べた。
