Abe makes historic address to U.S. Congress

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made history as the first Japanese leader to address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress on April 29.

Abe spoke about Japan’s relationship with the U.S. and expressed regret for Japan’s part in World War II. Abe’s visit was to show Japan as a close ally, willing and able to work with the U.S. in Asia.

安倍晋三首相は４月29日、米議会の上下両院合同会議で演説をした日本で最初の総理大臣として、歴史に残ることとなった。安倍首相は日本と米国の関係について述べるとともに、第二次大戦における日本の行為について痛切な反省を表明した。安倍首相の訪問は、日本が米国の親しい同盟国であり、アジアにおいて米国と協同していく意思と能力があることを示すためのものであった。
