Scotland votes to stay in U.K.

In a national referendum that was breathlessly covered by British media, Scotland rejected independence on Sept. 18.  Interest in the vote grew all over the world when surveys in early September indicated Scotland might break away from the United Kingdom, or Britain. The momentum for independence appeared to unsettle the U.K.’s ruling parties, and they promised to give Scotland greater power if it stayed in the union.

英国のメディアが固唾をのんで見守っていた国民投票で、スコットランドは9月18日、英国からの独立を否決した。９月上旬の世論調査でスコットランドが英国から独立することを示唆した時から、国民投票に対する関心が世界中で高まった。独立に向けての勢いの強さに動揺した英国与党は、英国に留まるのであればスコットランドにより大きな権限を与えると約束した。
