Heat wave rolls on and on

No one is feeling the heat wave in Japan more than Shimanto. The city in Kochi Prefecture reached 40 C for the fourth straight day on Aug. 13, the Meteorological Agency said. Almost two-thirds of the country’s 927 observation points measured north of 30 C. The agency recommends that people drink plenty of water and turn on air conditioners to prevent heatstroke.

猛暑、延々と続く

日本で四万十市民以上に猛暑を実感している人はいない。気象庁の発表によると、高知県の四万十市では8月13日、気温が4日間連続で40度に達した。全国の927ある観測点のほぼ３分の２で、30度を超える気温を観測した。気象庁は、熱中症を予防するためには、たくさん水を飲み、エアコンを使用するよう呼びかけている。

heat wave	猛暑。heatは熱、暑さの意味で、waveは波の意味。
roll on and on	延々と続く。rollは進む、続くの意味で、on and on は、延々と、長々との意味。
C (=Celsius)	摂氏、セ氏、セルシウス度。温度の単位で、世界中で広く使われているが、アメリカ合衆国や英国では華氏（カ氏、ファーレンハイト度= Fahrenheit）表記が一般的。摂氏15度の場合、 15 C とか 15 degrees C と表記されるが、15 degrees とCを省略することもある。
fourth straight day	４日間連続。straightは連続した、間を置かない、の意味。straight day の前に序数が来ると、～日間連続の意味になる。

measure north of ～	～を超える数値を観測する。northは方角の北の意味だが、南北の上に位置する方角であることから、ここでは～を超える、～より上の、という意味（＝more than）で使われている。比較的口語的な表現。less thanの意味でsouth of～という表現もある。

plenty of ～	たくさんの～
turn on ～	（電気製品のスイッチを）つける、オンにする。
prevent～	～を避ける、～を予防する。
heatstroke	熱中症
